Shipping Terms and Abbreviations

 

T.E.U.
(Twenty foot equivalent units) = a measure of the container carrying capacity of a ship = the number of twenty foot containers a ship can carry. Forty foot containers are carried on ships as well as twenty foot containers.
[ The French translation of T.E.U. is E.V.P. (equivalent vingt pieds).

GROSS TONNAGE.
(Gross Registered Tonnage) ( G.R.T.) = A ship's total internal volume ( 100cu.ft.= 1 gross ton)

DEADWEIGHT TONNAGE.
(Dwt.) = The amount of cargo + fuel + water + stores that a ship can carry when fully loaded.
